Description

August 14–16

Departure at 12 noon from FFA, Strandgata 23. The bus will take you to Herðubreiðarlindir and from there the group will be shuttled to the ascent to Herðubreið where the walk begins, the same will happen on the way back.

Tour guide: Fjóla K. Helgadóttir, Hjalti Jóhannesson and Sigurveig Árnadóttir, geologist

Ódáðahraun is a great place for those interested in geology, so FFA offers a geology tour where Kollóttadyngja and the surrounding area will be explored. On the southern side of Ódáðahraun at Bræðrafell in Kollóttadyngja, FFA has a recent and well-equipped 16-person hiking hut, where you can stay for two nights.

Water is scarce in Ódáðahraun. Water is collected from the roof of the hut, but it is still necessary to take at least two liters of water per person with you for safety. The area we are going through bears signs of major volcanic eruptions. It boasts peculiar and beautiful lava formations, desolation, a wealth of colors and not least great tranquility, and a geologist who is with us will teach us about what lies before our eyes.

Tour schedule:

1.d., Friday: Depart from Akureyri at 13.00? Drive as far as Herðubreiðarlindir where you will stop for a short while. After that, drive as far as the road leads west of Herðubreið following rough jeep tracks and walk from there about 7.5 km west to Bræðrafell. We will walk across Flätudyngja, which is aptly named. There you can see many interesting geological formations and huge craters. The hut is at 720 m altitude and there is little to no elevation gain.

2nd day, Saturday: Hike to Kollóttudyngja (1,177 m) from where there is a very wide view and Bræðrafell and various other geological formations can be viewed on the way back. Elevation about 500 m.

3.d., Sunday: Walk the same route back towards the Herðubreið ascent where the cars are waiting to take travelers to Akureyri. Estimated arrival time in Akureyri is 4-5 pm.
